Getting an ECF Grade

Some of you have been asking how to get an English Chess Federation Grade.

I have now established that you need to play 9 rated games between now and next July in order to get a grade.

This probably means going to two rated tournaments, as a tournament usually has 5 or 6 games.

Rapidplay tournaments give rapidplay grades, which change twice a year, but there are more longplay tournaments in the South West.

Mr. Trim today showed me a prototype full-sized pegged chess piece and board, similar to the one that we will be presenting to Sir Patrick Moore on the last Wednesday before the end of term.

Sir Patrick Moore Visit

As any of you who were at chess club a few weeks ago know, the club, along with the astronomical society, is hoping to present a chess board to Sir Patrick Moore, the famous astronomer and keen chess player.

We will hopefully be able to visit him to present it – anyone who didn’t get their name on the list should see Mr. Trim asap to get involved.
